Shooting victim dies in Jaffna

The 27-year-old person who sustained serious injuries after being shot at this afternoon had died in hospital.

An individual who had sustained critical injuries following a shooting which occurred in Jaffna- Ariyale area this afternoon was admitted to hospital.

Police noted that two individuals on a motorcycle had shot at the individual and fled the scene.

Armed forces assist clearing of garbage heap, Mahagiri damba landslides

A squadron on soldiers was deployed to assist the efforts to clear the garbage heaps that piled on the Hatton road leading to Sripada, that accumulated due to the landslides in Mahagiri damba earlier this week. 

Army media spokesperson Major General Roshan Seneviratne stated that a squadron of 40 soldiers were stationed near the site today (22), to assist in the clearing of garbage.

Bank employee commits suicide in Vavuniya

The Police reported that a bank employee working at Milveediya in Vavuniya committed suicide earlier today (22). 

Officials from the Vavuniya Police stated that the diseased person was 33-year old Kirubarasa Jesudas an employee at a state bank in Vavuniya. 

Jesudas left a suicide note and took his life when his family members left the house to visit the kovil earlier this morning.

Venerable Arambepola Rathanasara Thero has been remanded

Venerable Arambepola Rathanasara Thero has been remanded till October 30, in connection with the threatening of Rohingya refugees in Mount Lavinia. 

The Buddhist monk was arrested by Nittambuwa Police yesterday (20), and produced before the Galkissa Magistrate’s court according to the police media unit.

The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) recorded a statement from the Thero regarding the incident. 

Several suspects were arrested in connection with the attack which had occurred on September 26.

An all-inclusive relief package via 2018 Budget

The 2018 Budget is expected to offer an all-inclusive relief package for loans obtained from banks and other financial institutions by low income families, President Maithripala Sirisena said.

He said he was aware of the huge burden placed on poor families when repaying their loans and that especially the families in the North East have become victims of private banks and financial institutions under the ‘Micro Finance’ programmes launched by them after the war.

All motorists have been advised to use alternate routes to avoid congestion.

Jaffna University students boycott lectures


Jaffna University students boycott lectures

Students of the University of Jaffna have started a boycott for five days over the solution suggested by President Maithripala Sirisena during a discussion held regarding the political prisoners.

The students had decided to boycott lectures till October 25.

The fourth year examinations, which were scheduled to be held today, were also cancelled by the University administration due to the boycott.

The Jaffna University Students Federation called a discussion this morning regarding the President’s solutions on political prisoners.
