National reconciliation process needs support of all - President  Maithripala Sirisena

President Maithripala Sirisena says the patronage that should be given for the government’s task in building national reconciliation is to provide full support while understanding the process, but not to throw brickbats.

The President further said that all who act against this task of the government, which aimed at building peace and harmony among all communities in the country and preventing the recurrence of a war, might have to  repent regretfully in a cruel war in the future.

Lotteries Board re-transferred to Finance Ministry

A gazette notification has been issued enabling the transfer of the Development and National Lotteries Boards under the Ministry of Finance.

The Development and National Lotteries Board which was initially under the Finance Ministry was transferred to the Foreign Ministry on June 09, 2017, after the appointment of Ravi Karunanayake as the Foreign Minister.

It has now once again been vested with the Ministry of Finance.

UN Front Discussion With President to Postpone Next week

The special discussion scheduled to be held last evening between party leaders of the United National Front and President Maithripala Sirisena, regarding to the conduct of the Local Government and Provincial Council Elections has been postponed.

Taking to Twitter Minister of National Co-existence Mano Ganesan said, that  the meeting has been postponed to next week.

He yesterday said attention will be directed to crucial current issues including the delays in holding the pending elections.

Despite Chairman of All Ceylon Polythene Manufactuures and Recyclers Association(ACPMRA) Anura Wijethunga met  the Minister of Industry and Commerce Rishad  Bathiudeen on 8th August and insisted the immediate intervention of the Minister to resolve the polythene and plastic ban issue and follow up  steps taken by the Minister, President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday stressed that the Government’s policy decision taken on banning polythene and plastics will not be reversed.

Earth to experience total solar eclipse this August 21

The Ministry of Science, Technology and Research has announced that the Earth will be experiencing a total solar eclipse on August 21.

This will mark the first total solar eclipse since 1955.

It will be visible as a total solar eclipse in North America, whilst in Western Europe, North-Eastern Asia, South America and North-Western Africa will experience a partial solar eclipse.

A total solar eclipse (as seen from Planet Earth) is a type of eclipse that occurs when the moon passes between the sun and Earth, and the moon fully blocks (“occults”) the Sun.

Indian contingent to examine released forty-two fishing vessels

A group of Indian officials nominated by the Tamil Nadu region will arrive in Sri Lanka today (17) to inspect the condition of Indian fishing vessels released from custody of the Sri Lankan government.  

A party of seven, headed by the Deputy Director of the Indian fisheries Department will arrive later on today.

The Sri Lankan government decided to release 42 Indian fishing vessels from custody upon a request made by the Indian government.

Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara says that false information is being spread with regard to a video, involving the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and another individual, which initially appeared on social media websites. 

He made these comments while responding to a question from a journalist at the Cabinet decision press briefing held on Wednesday (16), regarding the video which is doing the rounds on Facebook and certain websites.

Rajitha Senarathna Announced Establishment of a Special Court to Probe Large Scale Corruption….

While participating in  Sathayagraha titled ‘Heta Delakshya Seeruwen’ organized by the “Movement for the Protection of Convention among the 6.2 million people” in front of the Viharamadevi Park yesterday(15).  Minister of Health Rajitha Senarathna has publicly announced that the Government will appoint a special Court  to hear cases of large scale corruption and frauds done by the previous regime specially Rajapakshas.

Further he said, the Cabinet had already initiated discussions on setting up of a Special Court immediately.
