The Army Intelligence Officer who had committed suicide by hanging himself in 2016, having written a letter taking responsibility for the killing of senior journalist and Sunday Leader Chief Editor Lasantha Wickrematunge, had in fact spent that day in the Kegalle area, the CID informed the Mount Lavinia Magistrate yesterday.

This revelation is based on the officer’s telephone records, unearthed by the CID.

Two suspects were arrested by the Sri Lanka Navy last night with seven kilograms of gold biscuits worth about Rs.50 million while attempting to smuggle them to India, Navy Media Spokesman Commander Dinesh Bandara said.

He said the suspects were arrested in the seas off Kankesanthurai (KKS) while they were sailing to India by using a dinghy.

“The raid was conducted following information received by the Navy and during the raid the navy had found seventy pieces of gold biscuits 100 grams each packed in parcels inside the dinghy ,”Commander Bandara said.

Two remanded for posting greetings with LTTE symbols on social media

Two persons have been remanded by the Colombo Additional Magistrate till January 24 for posting new year greetings with LTTE symbols and a picture of deceased LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran on social media.

The Terrorist Investigation Division (TID) arrested the suspects, Dinesh Kumar and Wijekumar Wigilishan following a complaint made by Ratnapura Division SSP Buddhika Siriwardena.

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa on Tuesday said that Pakistan and Sri Lanka were probably the only countries who understand what it takes to defeat the menace of terrorism.

The army chief is currently in Sri Lanka on a two-day official visit on the invitation of his Sri Lankan counterpart.

According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the COAS held meetings with the Sri Lankan military leadership including the chief of defence staff and chiefs of all three services.

On December 13, 2017, Sri Lanka acceded to the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and Their Destruction (also referred to as the Mine Ban Treaty or MBT) becoming its 163rd State Party. Heralding the revival of Sri Lanka’s role as a champion of humanitarian disarmament, this step was taken by the Government of Sri Lanka under the leadership of President Maithripala Sirisena, towards which The Sri Lanka Campaign to Ban Landmines (SLCBL) carried out advocacy for many years.

The Civil Aviation Authority has suspended the licence of the pilot who had flown the civilian aircraft that transported the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Minister Mahinda Amaraweera and his delegation to Palali without a proper flight plan and endangered the lives of his passengers.

A newspaper report was published claiming that the Air Force had flown the Minister to Palali and that the pilot had been uncertain of the route to his destination.

Enforcing the government’s commitment to create a drug free society, 928 kgs of seized cocaine valued at Rs. 16.7 billion was publicly destroyed for the first time in the country in the presence of President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Law and Order and Southern Development Minister Sagala Ratnayaka, Justice Minister Thalatha Athukorale and several other dignitaries in Katunayake yesterday. This is the largest stock of cocaine seized to date in South Asia and this is the first time that a seized stock of drugs was destroyed publicly in Sri Lanka.
