Rafael Nadal can't guarantee fitness for ATP Finals

Rafael Nadal ,ATP Finals

Rafael Nadal said on Friday he "hopes" to be ready for his opening match at the ATP Finals but admitted he has not been training at 100 per cent after an injury scare.

The 16-time Grand Slam champion pulled out of the Paris Masters last week with a knee problem, sparking fears that he would miss the season-ending finale in London.

When asked whether his knee would be ready for his first match against Belgium's David Goffin on Monday, the Spaniard told a pre-tournament press conference "I'll try my best," but admitted he had been wary during practice in recent days.

Rafa Nadal

Rafa Nadal has called his ascent once again to the top of the ATP charts as “unbelievable” even though it hasn’t come in the most celebratory of moments. The Spaniard was sure of reaching the top of the ATP rankings last week when Roger Federer pulled out of Cincinnati Masters. Nadal has returned to World No 1 after a gap of three years plagued with injuries, surgeries and drop in form.

Venus Williams wins but Kristina Mladenovic, Jelena Ostapenko upset in Rogers Cup

Venus Williams

Venus Williams prevailed in a three-setter but French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko and 13th seed Kristina Mladenovic crashed out of Rogers Cup with first round defeats on Monday.

Williams outlasted a lengthy rain delay and pesky Romanian opponent Irina-Camelia Begu to win her opening match 6-1 3-6 6-3. Less than a month after her run to the Wimbledon final, where she lost to Spain’s Garbine Muguruza, 37-year-old Williams again had to turn back time against a young challenger.

Novak Djokovic unlikely to be fit for US Open

Novak Djokovic unlikely to be fit for US Open

Novak Djokovic’s chances of playing the US Open – the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year looked bleak as soon as he hit his forehand wide and into the tramlines in the quarterfinals of his Wimbledon clash. Not one to go away without a fight, Djokovic surrendered midway into the match and later said his elbow injury prevented him from completing the contest. Now the situation has been looked at and the diagnosis suggests a return for the Grand Slam in Flushing Meadows looks extremely unlikely.

“Today he did not play very well. He played good, but he was a bit nervous and tense,” said Toni Nadal, who coached his nephew to 14 Grand Slam titles.
