Sri Lankan Tamil refugees in Tamil Nadu fear to return

Sri Lankan Tamil refugees living in welfare camps fear to return to their home land due to threatening of the Sri Lanka military, Indian media reported.

The refugees fled the country due to the ethnic conflict which lasted for nearly three decades. They have been placed in welfare camps in India especially in Tamil Nadu.

In Tamil Nadu, there are 114 welfare camps which consist of more than 100,000 refugees. After the regime changed in Sri Lanka numbers of them have returned while others stay in India.

Several of the Tamil asylum seekers stranded after arriving by boat on the Indonesian island of Aceh have been tortured in Sri Lanka and face certain persecution if they are returned, a compatriot living in Australia has claimed.

Karikalan, who has agreed only to be identified by a nickname, came to Australia as an asylum seeker by boat in 2010. He was recognised as a refugee – having a “well-founded fear of persecution” in Sri Lanka – and is now a permanent resident, living in Melbourne.
