Syria government behind sarin gas attack in April: UN probe

In the first UN report to officially blame Damascus, the UN Commission of Inquiry (COI) on Syria said it had gathered an “extensive body of information” showing the Syrian airforce was behind the horrific sarin gas attack on April 4.

“All evidence available leads the Commission to conclude that there are reasonable grounds to believe Syrian forces dropped an aerial bomb dispersing sarin in Khan Sheikhun,” the report said.

Syria Gas Attack Kills Dozens

Scores of Syrians, many of them women and young children, were killed Tuesday in one of the deadliest chemical attacks of the country's six-year war, according to doctors, rescue workers and witnesses.

Airstrikes on the northwestern town of Khan Sheikhoun began just after daybreak, delivering an unidentified chemical agent that killed at least 58 people and filled clinics across the area with patients foaming at the mouth or struggling to breathe.

France and its partners will continue to put pressure on the Syrian government.

France and its partners will continue to put pressure on the Syrian government and its allies toward a goal of ending violence in the besieged city of Aleppo, French Ambassador to the United Nations Francois Delattre said before a UN Security Council meeting Monday regarding Syria.

"This is why, as we speak, France and its partners will keep up and increase it [the pressure] on the regime and its allies. That is exactly what we want in order to transform this political pressure into action to stop the bloodshed in Aleppo," Delattre said.
