As the Prime Minister is expected to inaugurate the memorial at Peikarumbu in Rameswaram, various facilities in it are proceeding at a rapid pace and nearing completion. Security has been strengthened in Rameswaram and there is police presence everywhere.

To make it appealing to tourists, a number of facilities and attractions have been included in the project. Inside the memorial, 10 lively paintings of Kalam as President and scientist have been planned. They are being given finishing touches at a fast pace presently. To add to the aesthetic appeal of the memorial, a 14-foot high gate made of teak wood has been fixed at the entrance.

5 fishermen arrested by Sri Lankan Navy


Five fishermen from Rameswaram were arrested by Sri Lankan Navy while they were fishing in the high seas, on Monday.

Sources said that as the 45-day ban on fishing by mechanised boats is in place in view of the breeding season in the Eastern coast. Five fishermen, Anthony Nishanth, Santhiya Mishashan, Arockia Ajo, Raja Gunasekaran and Santhiya Abishek, had ventured into the sea in a motor fitted country boat belonging to Anthoniyar Adimai from Thangachimadam coastal village near Rameswaram, on Sunday night.

Being one of the most important pilgrim spots for Hindus, thousands of devotees (both Shaivaites and Vaishnavites) thronged Rameswaram island to offer special prayers for the departed souls in the family.

On the new moon day on Wednesday, lakhs of devotees visited the Ramanathaswamy Temple at Rameswaram and offered Tharpanam, a special prayer for their ancestors and took a holy dip at the Agni Theertham. To control the crowd the temple management had closed three of the 22 theerthams, including Gayathri, Savithri and Saraswathi.

Death of Indian fisherman: TN fishermen begin indefinite fast

Fishermen in Rameswaram today ended their week-long protest over the killing of a colleague, allegedly by the Sri Lankan Navy, while those from Tamil Nadu’s five coastal districts began an indefinite fast over the issue and to press for other demands, Out Look India reported.

Over 5,000 fishermen from Nagapattinam, Karaikal, Tiruvaurur, Thanjavur and Pudukottai began the indefinite fast in front of the head post office in Rameswaram. The stir is being led by fishermen panchayat leaders of the five districts.

Thangachimadam stir to continue as talks fail

Much was expected of talks between fishermen leaders and officials at Rameswaram on Thursday, to end the three-day old protest. However, no consensus could be reached. As a result, the protest continued peacefully at Thangachimadam near Rameswaram on Thursday.

The flashpoint was the firing incident on Monday, when Sri Lankan Navy had allegedly shot local fishermen in mid-sea. K Bridjo, a 21-year-old fisherman had died. The incident caused a furore among the fishing community, resulting in protest at Thangachimadam.
