5 fishermen arrested by Sri Lankan Navy


Five fishermen from Rameswaram were arrested by Sri Lankan Navy while they were fishing in the high seas, on Monday.

Sources said that as the 45-day ban on fishing by mechanised boats is in place in view of the breeding season in the Eastern coast. Five fishermen, Anthony Nishanth, Santhiya Mishashan, Arockia Ajo, Raja Gunasekaran and Santhiya Abishek, had ventured into the sea in a motor fitted country boat belonging to Anthoniyar Adimai from Thangachimadam coastal village near Rameswaram, on Sunday night.

Government orders release of 77 Tamil Nadu fishermen

In a goodwill gesture the Sri Lankan government has ordered the release of all 77 Tamil Nadu fishermen who had been languishing in recent months in various jails in northern Sri Lanka for allegedly trespassing into their territorial waters, reports reaching here on Monday said. While these fishermen are from the coastal districts of Ramanathapuram including Rameswaram Island, Pudukkottai and Nagapattinam, the Press Trust of India, however, reported that Sri Lanka ordered the release of only 49 of those 77 fishermen.
