A Sri Lankan asylum seeker has been ordered for deportation next week

A Sri Lankan asylum seeker has been ordered for deportation next week, despite the United Nations committee against torture requesting Australia not move him while it investigates whether he will be tortured if he is returned against his will.

The deportation order issued for Tamil asylum seeker Shantaruban by the Australian Border Force says he will be deported on 22 February. He will not be permitted any visitors at the airport when he is removed and he will be escorted on his flight to Colombo.

He has refused to sign the order.

"President Mahinda Rajapaksa rendered a great service to the country. However, some people were misled by false propaganda against him. Those who were misled in 2015 have realised their folly and shown that they want Mahinda Rajapaksa."

Army Commander Mahesh Senanayake said that they would not be conducting an inquiry the actions of the Defence Attache of the Sri Lankan High Commission in UK Brigadier Priyanka Fernando after he was spotted making a throat slitting gesture towards protesters who thronged the Embassy office in the UK.

"On the day of the incident the protesters who were carrying LTTE flags had shouted slogans against the Sri Lankan government and sung songs in praise of Prabhakaran.

Daya Master’s assailant released on bail

The suspect detained for attacking former LTTE media spokesperson Daya Master was released on bail by the Jaffna Magistrate’s Court yesterday (30). 

Officials from the Jaffna Police Division detained a suspect that attempted to stab former L.T.T.E media spokesperson Daya Master on January 8. 

Daya Master, who is currently a producer at a leading media outlet in was attacked while leaving the media station yesterday. 

The suspect has been identified as a 53 year old resident of Jaffna. The intentions of the attack are yet to be revealed.

Two remanded for posting greetings with LTTE symbols on social media

Two persons have been remanded by the Colombo Additional Magistrate till January 24 for posting new year greetings with LTTE symbols and a picture of deceased LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran on social media.

The Terrorist Investigation Division (TID) arrested the suspects, Dinesh Kumar and Wijekumar Wigilishan following a complaint made by Ratnapura Division SSP Buddhika Siriwardena.

SL Army compensated for vacating Mullaitivu land

A300-day protest staged by a group of persons demanding that the army vacate 133 acres at Keppapilavu in the former LTTE stronghold Mullaitivu had been brought to an end by relocating troops stationed there, Rehabilitation Ministry spokesperson told The Island.

The spokesperson said that Rehabilitation Minister D. M. Swaminathan had, following consultations with relevant authorities, paid Rs. 148 mn for the relocation of troops. The land would be officially handed over today (Dec 28), he said.
