The three Islamists who killed eight people after driving a van into pedestrians on London Bridge and then attacking nearby revellers had initially tried to hire a 7.5 tonne truck, the head of the UK capital's counter-terrorism unit said on Friday.

Commander Dean Haydon also revealed that the men had a stockpile of petrol bombs in the back of their van and carried out their deadly attack with pink ceramic knives. Officers also discovered a Koran in their safe house, opened at a page on martyrdom.

Just hours before Khuram Butt and two accomplices drove a rented van into pedestrians on London Bridge and stabbed people nearby, he was asking neighbours where he could hire a vehicle. One of the neighbours, Ikenna Chigbo, said he recognised Butt from a photo issued by British police following Saturday night's attack in the capital which killed seven and injured nearly 50. Chigbo told Reuters that the man he knew as "Abz" had shown interest in a van he had rented.

Eight police officers fired an unprecedented number of bullets to stop three attackers in London who appeared to be suicide bombers wearing explosive vests, Britain's counter-terrorism police chief said on Sunday.

The three attackers drove a hired van into pedestrians on London Bridge on Saturday night then ran into the bustling Borough Market area where they stabbed numerous people. Seven died and 48 were taken to hospital.

The attackers were wearing what were later found to be fake explosive vests.

Seven people were killed in a terror attack on Saturday by three assailants on London Bridge and in the bustling Borough Market nightlife district, the chief of London's police force said on Sunday.

The trio were shot dead by the police at the scene.

Three assailants smashed a van into pedestrians on London Bridge before attacking revellers in a popular nightlife hub with knives, leaving seven dead in the third deadly terror attack in Britain since March.

Britain's main political parties temporarily suspended campaigning for Thursday's general election and Prime Minister Theresa May held an emergency meeting following the rampage on Saturday evening.

 A van ploughed into pedestrians and several people were stabbed in central London on Saturday, leaving at least 20 injured in what police called a "terrorist" attack days before a general election.

Armed police opened fire during two "terrorist incidents" at London Bridge and nearby Borough Market, a popular nightspot teeming with bars on a warm summer evening.

"We can confirm we have taken at least 20 patients to six hospitals across London," the London Ambulance Service said in a statement.

Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the London Bridge terrorist attack, issuing a statement through its propaganda news service on Sunday.

Three attackers mowed down pedestrians before continuing the rampage on foot nearby in Borough Market. Armed police shot and killed the attackers within eight minutes.

Seven people were killed and 48 injured in the attack which began at 10pm local time. Shortly after midnight, police officially declared the attacks at London Bridge and Borough Market as “terrorist incidents.”

Two French citizens injured in London attack

At least two French citizens were injured, one seriously, in Saturday night's attacks in London, according to the French President's Office.

On Saturday night, militants drove a van at high speed into pedestrians on London Bridge before stabbing revelers on the street and in nearby bars, killing at least six people and wounding nearly 50.

Armed police rushed to the scene and shot dead the three male attackers in the Borough Market area near the bridge, as authorities urged Londoners on Twitter to "run, hide, tell" if they were caught up in the violence.
