Suicide bomb attack near intelligence service office

A suicide bomber has killed five people in an attack on the capital Kabul.

A spokesman for the interior ministry says that the bomber blew himself up Monday near an office of the country’s intelligence service, killing five people and wounding two.

The victims included women who were in a vehicle passing near the attack site.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but recent attacks in the capital have been claimed both by Taliban insurgents and Islamic States group fighters who have stepped up their attacks against Afghan security forces.

Ahead of the celebration on Sunday, signs of increased security were in evidence across Kabul, with extra police checkpoints and roadblocks in many areas, while security was also increased in other cities. 

"We are concerned about this. We had internal fighting in the past but never religious fighting,” said Arif Rahmani, a member of parliament and a member of the mainly Shia Hazara community that has been particularly targeted, Reuters reported.

 A massive suicide blast at a Shiite mosque in Kabul killed at least 27 people Monday and wounded 35 as worshippers gathered to mark a religious ceremony, officials said.

"It was a suicide bomber who blew himself up among worshippers inside the mosque, killing 27 and wounding 35," senior police official Fridon Obaidi said.

Police cordoned off the area around the Baqirul Olum mosque in the west of the Afghan capital.

Three Taliban attackers and one policeman are dead after an attack on Kabul's Northgate HOTEL, just days after the deadliest attack in Kabul for 15 years.

Three policemen were wounded during a battle with insurgents as they tried to enter the hotel through a gap made when they detonated a truck filled with explosives, General Abdul Rahman Rahimi, head of Kabul police, said. 

"Two of our police patrols got to the scene immediately after the initial blast," General Rahimi said.

At least 80 people have been killed in two suicide bombings at a march in the Afghan capital Kabul, officials say.

More than 230 people have been injured in the attack, according to the interior ministry, and are being taken to Istiqlal hospital.

Witnesses said the blasts happened where hundreds of Afghanistan's Hazara minority had gathered to protest over the route of a planned multi-million dollar power line.
