 At least one suicide car bomber and a number of gunmen attacked a provincial police headquarters in Afghanistan on Tuesday, officials said. The Taliban claimed responsibility.

An exact casualty toll was unclear as the attack was ongoing in Gardez, the capital of Paktia province, a police official told Reuters.

The attackers targeted a police training centre attached to the headquarters, according to a statement by the Interior Ministry.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for a suicide attack on the house of an Afghan member of parliament on Wednesday night that officials said killed at least five people and wounded a number of others.

A security official said one attacker blew himself up at the house of Mir Wali, a member of parliament from the volatile southern province of Helmand, killing three security guards and allowing two other gunmen to get into the compound, where a meeting was underway.

The initial explosion - now assumed to be from a car rigged with explosives - was heard at about 7.30 pm local time.
