Love Your Country, But No Blinkered Patriotism Please, Says President Pranab Mukherjee

The freedom to doubt, disagree and dispute intellectually must be protected as an essential pillar of democracy, President Pranab Mukherjee has said at a time divisive politics and intolerance, especially on social media, is being widely debated.

"It is natural to love one's country and see as much glory in the past as one can detect. But patriotism should not result in blinkered approaches to interpreting history or a compromise with truth in order to justify an argument of choice," Mr Mukherjee said, addressing the Indian History Congress in Thiruvananthapuram this evening.

SLFP will not agree to federal set up: Minister

President Maithripala Sirisena-led Sri Lanka Freedom Party would not agree to a federal set up in the new Constitution, a senior minister said amid calls by Tamil groups in favour of a federal system.

“There are three things that our party believe very strongly in the current constitution reform process,” Nimal Siripala de Silva, the Minister of Transport, said while addressing reporters in the central town of Kandy.

“The position for Buddhism must not be diluted, the unitary character of the state must be preserved and there cannot be a federal system,” de Silva asserted.

Prominent UK Rights Activist Andy Hall, Fearing For Safety, Leaves Thailand

Prominent British rights activist Andy Hall left Thailand early on Monday, saying he feared for his safety amid legal problems and growing harassment from companies that have been "irrational, vindictive and aggressive".

Hall, who has worked on the rights of migrant workers in Thailand for 11 years, has recently faced defamation lawsuits by companies he has accused of labour violations.


Demonstration in Jaffna urging media freedom

A demonstration was held in Jaffna today (Wednesday) demanding the media freedom. The demonstration was part of the memorial services held for slain Journalist Mayilwahanam Nimalarajan.

The above said demonstration was organized by Jaffna Media unit and it was staged In front of the bus station. The demonstrators urged the government to take measures regarding the abolition of police harassment and disappearances and assassinations of journalists.
