French Front National founder Jean-Marie Le Pen warns of losses after granddaughter quits

The veteran right-winger told Le Parisien newspaper the party might not win the expected number of seats in next month’s parliamentary election as a result of the announcement.

He said: “This departure will weigh heavily in the election.  Marine Le Pen could pay dearly.”

Marion  — who is Marine’s niece — is popular with voters in the party’s southern strongholds.

She announced her retirement from politics citing  “personal and political reasons”.

The Front National leader Le Pen criticised the US president for what she perceived as hypocrisy following his sudden embrace of the military alliance.

French far-right presidential hopeful Marine Le Pen said that she would restore border control and fight against Islamic fundamentalism if elected to curb terrorism threat in France, in an interview with Le Parisien newspaper on Sunday.

"To begin with, I will restore our national borders. Secondly, I will deport all foreign nationals with [threat to national security] fiche S indicator, who are linked to fundamentalism, in compliance with precautionary principle.

French far-right leader Marine Le Pen on Sunday accused the media of "campaigning hysterically" in favour of Emmanuel Macron, her centrist rival for the presidency, as new polls showed him enjoying a jump in support.

Le Pen, speaking at a rally in the western city of Nantes, launched a series of attacks on the 39-year-old independent who has emerged as a frontrunner to become France's next leader.

French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen said that NATO exists only ‘to serve Washington’s objectives’, and that she planned to hold a Brexit-style referendum, in an interview with a Greek newspaper.

Le Pen, the leader of France's far-right National Front and a candidate for the 2017 presidential elections, is known for her Euroscepticism and anti-immigrant views. Together with France, she also suggested that Portugal, Italy, Spain, Ireland, Greece and Cyprus should also leave the European Union.

On Twitter the Eurosceptic politician said: “The promised apocalypse has not come #Brexit.”

Many of her followers said Frexit would be a certainty if Ms Le Pen became France's next president.

One tweeter said: "Exactly, go France. Frexit!”
