GSP+ RESTORATION, A VICTORY FOR PRESIDENT SIRISENA’S FOREIGN POLICY


The economic and political specialists have pointed out that the foreign policy of the current government headed by President Maithripala Sirisena and the support of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and other ministers has created a positive status of the country that is to be facilitated with the GSP+ concession.

President Sirisena, during his official visit to Germany, requested German Chancellor Angela Merkel to help get the GSP+ relief to Sri Lanka again. The Chancellor agreed to help Sri Lanka on that regard.

India Should Join Multi-Billion Dollar China-Pakistan Economic Corridor: Top Pak Army General


In a surprise move, a top Pakistani General has invited India to join the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, saying New Delhi should "shun enmity" with Islamabad and jointly reap the benefit of the multi-billion dollar project. Lieutenant General Aamir Riaz, Commander of the Southern Command which is based in Quetta, yesterday said this while speaking at an award distribution ceremony at the Balochistan Frontier Corps (FC) headquarters.

Sri Lanka opens a Resident Mission in Ethiopia


With a view to broadening political, trade and economic relations with Ethiopia and also forge closer relations with the African Union (AU) that is headquartered in Addis Ababa, the Government has established a resident mission in Ethiopia.

Sri Lanka’s Ambassador-designate to Ethiopia, is Sumith Dassanayake, who has already assumed office and awaits the presentation of his official credentials to President Mulatu Teshome.

Cameroon Train Was Going 'Abnormally' Fast Before Crash: Company


The train that derailed in Cameroon last week killing 79 people was travelling "abnormally" fast before the crash, a senior executive from the rail operator's French parent company told AFP on Tuesday.

"On part of the tracks approaching the station where the derailment occurred, we had speeds that were abnormally high compared to the speeds we should have had," said Eric Melet, head of Bollore Africa Railways.

A judicial enquiry has been launched into the accident which also injured about 550 people.

FCID arrests Thirukumar Nadesan


Businessman Thirukumar Nadesan has been arrested by the police Financial Crimes investigations Division (FCID) today.

Nadesan was arrested as he arrived at the FCID to give a statement in connection with a land and house in Malwana which former minister Basil Rajapaksa and its registered owner had denied ownership of the property.

Nadesan will be produced before the Pugoda Magistrate this afternoon.
