People in landslides prone areas told to stay alert


The Disaster Management Center (DMC) advises those living in landslide prone areas in Kandy, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya and Ratnapura districts to stay alert as heavy rainfall is expected in those areas.
The DMC urges people living in such area to evacuate immediately if there are signs of landslides.

Adjournment speech on Disaster situation to be held in parliament


An adjournment speech on the existing disaster crisis situation will be held in parliament today (9), at 10.30am. 

The adjournment speech was planned to be held upon a request made by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and the Joint Opposition Party.

The Disaster Management Center reported that around 13000 individuals are still being held at 149 rescue centers around the country.

The largest  number of refugees have been reported from the Ratnapura district, where 9202 individuals have been accommodated at 105 rescue centers.

Warnings issued due to heavy rains across island


The disaster management center has issued a warning requesting all residents living in settlements found on low ground around the Kelani, Kalu and Gin rivers to be on alert. 

The Department of irrigation stated that the Kos, Anuradhapura and Badegama areas will be affected by the Kelani, Kalu and Gin rivers respectively, due to the water levels rising in the light of the ongoing monsoon season. 

The department added that work has begun on clearing the water off the cross roads in Habaraduwa.
