Election Commission postpones Jaffna university forum

The Election Commission intervened to postpone a forum on the Constitutional Assembly Interim Report at the Jaffna University yesterday.

The Election Commission, acting on a complaint it received has written to the University authorities to stop the discussion on the basis that it is likely to benefit certain parties and disadvantageous to others at the upcoming Local Government polls.

Vigneswaran says only 5.2 % of private lands have been returned

Chief Minister of the Northern Province, C.V. Vigneswaran, has said that out of the 67,000 acres of private lands of the Tamils seized by the Sri Lankan armed forces during the war, only 3,500 acres have been returned so far, the New Indian Express reported.  

Since the war ended in May 2009, only 5.2 % of the lands seized has been given back to their rightful owners, he said.

Vigneswaran lodges yet another complaint with EU

Vigneswaran, has complained to the European Union (EU) human rights inspection team that the Sri Lankan army is   running hundreds of schools in his province when it has no right to do so under the 13th amendment of the constitution, the New Indian Express reported today.

US Embassy in Colombo had rejected Northern Province Chief Minister C.V. Vigneswaran’s request to conduct medical checks to verify whether ex-LTTE carders in custody, were allegedly injected with a poisonous drug, TNA Provincial Councillor M. K. Shivajilingam said today.

He said Chief Minister C.V. Vigneswaran had requested American Ambassador Athul Keshap to carry out medical tests by American doctors on ex-LTTE carders.

Vigneswaran says that US Air Force’s medical team will examine former LTTE cadres who had fallen sick allegedly because they were injected with poisonous substances by the Sri Lankan armed forces when they were undergoing detention or rehabilitation after surrender, the New Indian Express reports.

Vigneswaran claims rights to Moragahakanda project

Northern Province Chief Minister C.V. Vigneswaran yesterday claimed rights to the Moragahakanda project as it supplied water to the Northern Province.

Chief Minister revealed these sentiments during a discussion with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) yesterday.  He added that there would be issues if the central government had full authority over the project.

“We are happy that water is from the Mahaweli River is being distributed to the North, we have no objection to that,” Vigneswaran said.
