19 students of Jayewardenepura University injured in head-on collision


At least nineteen students of the Sri Jayewardenepura university have been hospitalized after the bus that they were traveling in collided head-on with a car at Navinna Junction in Maharagama on the High Level Road last night.

Police said around 65 students of the university who were on their way to the university after attending a programme in Thalangama area had met with the accident.

The injured students were admitted to the Colombo South Teaching Hospital. Police said one of the students has been transferred to the Colombo National Hospital.

Building collapse in Wellawatta: search operations in progress

Building in Progress Collapsed

The search operation for the victims of the building collapse in Wellawatta is still ongoing, Police say.

The armed forces, Police and public are all working in cooperation to rescue the victims, reports reveal.

Investigations have reportedly been opened regarding the accident.

Meanwhile, one of the rescued victims died after being admitted to the National Hospital in Colombo.

Reports confirm that 19 injured individuals are currently receiving treatment at the Kalubowila Hospital and Colombo National Hospital.

Girl injured in Piliyandala shooting dies


The eleven-year-old girl who was injured during the shooting incident on May 9 in Piliyandala has succumbed to injuries at hospital, bringing the death toll from the incident to two.

The girl died this morning while receiving treatment in the intensive care unit of the Colombo National Hospital, the Director of the hospital said. 

A police Constable was killed and five others including two children were injured when gunmen opened fire at a team of officers from the Police Narcotics Bureau, on their way to a drug raid in a car.

Two doctors arrested for attempting to climb water tank tower

A couple who are said to be doctors were arrested while they were allegedly attempting to climb the water tank tower at the Colombo National Hospital , police said.

The couple was arrested at around 11.00 pm last evening following a tip-off provided by the security officials, police added. The two doctors, 33 and 29 year-old, are to be engaged within few weeks, it was also reported.

A leading drugs trafficker Chamara Sandaruwan alias ‘Kudu Roshan’ was reportedly hacked to death by two unidentified men at Wanathamulla in Borella this morning.

Police said the incident had occurred near the M.H. Mohammed Grounds and that the 42-year-old resident of Wanathamulla had died on admission to the Colombo National Hospital.

The Borella Police are investigating.

479 incidents reported to CNH on the New Year’s Eve ; 113 road accidents

A total number of 479 incidents including 113 road accidents had been reported to the Colombo National Hospital on the New Year’s Eve and the day before, hospital sources said today.

The hospital said that there were 12 cases related to fireworks. Hospital’s Public Relations Officer Pushpa Ramyani Soysa said road accidents, other bodily injuries caused by domestic accidents, domestic violence were the highest during the past two days.

However, she said there was a 13 percent drop from the total incidents compared to last year.

‘Udamvita Smare’ shot dead

An underworld gangster known as ‘Udamvita Samare’ was shot dead by unidentified gunmen at the Veyangoda Railway Station last night, Police said.

They said another individual was with him was also admitted to the Wathupitiwala hospital with gun-shot injuries. He was later transferred to the Colombo National Hospital in critical condition.

The 42-year-old deceased was a resident of Nittambuwa.

254 accidents during Christmas

A total of number of 254 cases had been reported to the Colombo National Hospital on the Christmas Eve, which is a thirteen percent increase, comparing to last year, which stood up at 219, National Hospital Coordinator Pushpa Ramyani de Soysa said.

Colombo National Hospital to stop accepting unidentified bodies

The Colombo National Hospital (CNH) had decided to stop accepting unidentified bodies to the mortuary following the Hospital’s morgue becoming full with unidentified and unclaimed human bodies, Deputy Director of the CNH Dr. Anil Jasinghe said.

He said that he had informed the Western Province Senior DIG of Police regarding the decision.
