Apparently disappointed with the Supreme Court ruling in the Cauvery water sharing dispute case, the Tamil Nadu government on Sunday said that it would consult legal experts before going for an appeal.

"As far as the appeal is concerned, the Tamil Nadu government will take action after going through the verdict and consulting legal experts," Chief Minister K Palaniswami said in response to reporters' queries.

Members of the Tamil film fraternity will meet Chief Minister K Palaniswami today over the double taxation issue, a producers' body has said.

Film producers in the state, who met state minister S P Velumani yesterday, have decided not to release any new movies from October 6 due to the implementation of a 10 per cent local body tax in addition to the Goods and Service Tax.

A resolution to this effect was adopted at the meeting of the board, chaired by Chief Minister K Palaniswami. Citing recent reports in a section of media that CICT will come under the ambit of Tiruvarur-based Central University of Tamil Nadu, it said, “The institute should not lose its autonomous status due to any reason.” 

Reports had claimed that CICT, set up by the Centre in 2008, would lose its autonomy if it came under the administrative control of the central varsity.

The students, including girls, who have cleared the test, urged the government not to insist or press for exemption from NEET since their performance was good and expressed hope of getting admission into medical colleges on the basis of the scores.  

The government’s move to obtain exemption by passing an ordinance in the Assembly would come as a blow to many students who would be mentally upset, as they expected to get seats based on NEET score, for which they had prepared nearly for one year, they told reporters.

Remand Of Five Arrested TN Fishermen Extended Till May 29: Sri Lanka Court

On March 26, 12 fishermen from Pudukottai district were arrested by Sri Lankan navy.

A court in Sri Lanka has extended till May 29 the remand of five Tamil Nadu fishermen, who were arrested on May 1 by the island nation's navy for allegedly fishing in their territorial waters

The arrested fishermen from nearby Thangachimadam, who were lodged in a prison at Vavuniya, were brought to the court in Thalaimannar, where the judge extended their remand.
