 The fishermen from Pudukottai district were arrested for allegedly fishing close to the island nation and taken to Karainagar along with their boat, Inspector of Fisheries department C George said.

The naval men also snapped the fishing nets of several other fishermen from this coastal town and Mandapam, while they were fishing near Katchatheevu islet and chased them away, he said.

On September 11, twelve fishermen from here were arrested by the Lankan Navy for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line.

5 fishermen arrested by Sri Lankan Navy


Five fishermen from Rameswaram were arrested by Sri Lankan Navy while they were fishing in the high seas, on Monday.

Sources said that as the 45-day ban on fishing by mechanised boats is in place in view of the breeding season in the Eastern coast. Five fishermen, Anthony Nishanth, Santhiya Mishashan, Arockia Ajo, Raja Gunasekaran and Santhiya Abishek, had ventured into the sea in a motor fitted country boat belonging to Anthoniyar Adimai from Thangachimadam coastal village near Rameswaram, on Sunday night.

Three arrested over physical altercation with police in Padukka

Three individuals believed to have been involved in a physical altercation with the police in Padukka, hindering their ability to carry put their duty have been arrested, police reveal.

Sources reveal that the attack that had occurred at around midday yesterday (6),  involving a group of individuals approaching the police officer who was taking down a complaint from another recipient , who then attacked the officer as well as the officers who had intervened to stop the altercation.

The officers are currently receiving treatment at the Homagama Base Hospital.

A 75-year-old man and his son have been arrested for allegedly running a betting racket in the garb of astrology business in southeast Delhi's Sangam Vihar area. The accused, Ram Snehi Lal, is specially-abled and had included his son (35) in the racket, allegedly being run by him, police said.

Lal pretended to be an astrologer and was running the racket from his home. During previous raids, he took advantage of his disability and managed to claim innocence, police said.

Two youths arrested with grenade and firearm

Two suspects have been arrested for the possession of a hand grenade and a firearm in the Divithurawatta area in Elpitiya.

The suspects, 21-year-old and a 24-year-old, were arrested following investigations carried out into a murder in the Elpitiya area.

A grenade manufactured in a foreign country and a locally manufacture 9mm pistol were taken into custody.

The suspects and weapons are to be produced before the Elpitiya Magistrate’s Court today (18).

Thirteen arrested for engaging in illegal fishing

Thirteen Sri Lankan fishermen have been arrested for allegedly engaging in illegal fishing practices without valid license in the sea area of Akurala.

Naval personnel attached to SLNS Dakshina in Galle belonging to the Southern Naval Command together with Coast Guard personnel nabbed the fishermen on Monday (30).

During the arrest; a dinghy, a trawler, a canoe, a fishing net and a stock of 200 kg of fish were taken into custody.

Astrologer Vijitha Rohana arrested by CID

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has arrested Astrologer Vijitha Rohana Wijemuni.

He has been arrested for allegedly misleading the public by making false predictions and is expected to be produced before court today (31), police said.

The former Sri Lankan sailor, who had attacked visiting Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi with a rifle butt in 1987, was accused of making an astrological prediction about President Maithripala Sirisena.

Thirty seven man power employees who were protesting in front of the Ministry of Power & Renewable energy violating a court order were arrested, police said. 

A group of workers recruited to the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) through manpower agencies yesterday engaged in a protest in front of the ministry despite a court order preventing such gatherings at the location. They were arrested last night and are to be produced at court today (25).

A group of 7 university students including four Buddhist monks, arrested in connection with yesterday’s protest at the Kollupitiya junction, have been remanded till January 26 by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court.

 Police said that the arrested suspects, including a female university student, were ordered remanded after they were produced before the court today (20).
