Minister says diesel tax imposed for “welfare of the people”
Speaking at a media briefing Minister of Petroleum and Petroleum Gas, Chandima Weerakkody noted that a profit of Rs. 365b has been recorded during the first four months after paying tariffs.
He added that a tax of Rs. 6 would be imposed on diesel for the welfare of the people in the country. The treasury receives money and the government also charges tax of Rs. 6 per litre from the IOC.
He went on to note that they do not wish to increase prices of diesel or petrol. In addition he noted that 80M USD is due from SriLankan Airlines and large sums of money is due from the tri-forces and the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB).
