FR Petition Filed by SAITM Graduates
SAITM Medical College graduates , W.K. Dilshan Sampath of Matara and Thushari Charitha Haputanthri of Korathota, Kaduwela have filed Fundamental Rights Application No. 325/14 in the Supreme Court yesterday.
According to petitioner Sampath, he obtained 3 ‘A’ passes from Ananda College and Haputanthri obtained 3 ‘B’ passes at the A/L examination from Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Colombo, to enter SAITM Medical College.
The petitioners stated that according to the medical service minute, only graduates of State and foreign universities are eligible to join the Government Medical Service and graduates from other degree awarding institutes are not eligible . The petitioners state that exclusion of graduates from degree awarding institutes for recruitment as Medical Officers is unfair, unreasonable, arbitrary and capricious.
This matter was taken up before a Bench comprising Justices Buwaneka Aluwihare, Priyantha Jayawardena and Upali Abeyratne.
When this matter was taken up in Court, Lawyers said, the matter can be settled and Court ordered it to be mentioned on 27 February.The Supreme Court yesterday set 27 February to mention the Fundamental Rights Application.
