Australian Tennis Open Championship: Roger Federer celebrates his victory

Australian Open 2017 Champion Roger Federer celebrated his ‘fairytale’ victory and his 18th Grand Slam title at the Men’s Australian Tennis Open Championship trophy in Melbourne on Monday (Jan 30).

Federer won his first Grand Slam title in five years on Sunday (January 29), overcoming Rafael Nadal in a five-set final, winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

He climbed to 10th in the rankings after his win and said it was his self belief when he had been trailing 3-1 in the final set that had helped him to victory.

“I had to look at some highlights again just to remember how close the match was again, and just go through the emotions again. What makes me most happy is when I see my friends and my family happy and all, you know, my support team, everybody was there.

“When I saw how they were celebrating again, it really made it emotional when I heard that in Switzerland people were following me and I saw people just being generally really happy for me, that I won a Slam again and particularly this one, maybe it’s a bit of a fairytale, you know, to come back this way,” he said.

Federer entered the event after nearly six months away to recover from a knee injury.
