Brigadier Priyanka will Return to Sri Lanka- Army Spokesman

Sri Lanka Army Spokesman Sumith Atapattu says,  Sri Lanka’s UK defence attache Brigadier Priyanka Fernando who was involved in recent protest controversy, will return to colombo for consultations.

He said this in response to a question raised by a journalist at a press conference  held today (Wednesday) at the Government Information Department auditorium.

Brigadier Priyanka Fernando made a throat-slitting gestures at protesters outside the Sri Lankan High Commission in London on Sri Lanka’s Independence Day sparked debate.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, speaking in Parliament today (21), says that the National Government is still valid. 

UPFA General Secretary Mahinda Amaraweera, who also delivered a statement in Parliament, confirmed that the National Government is still intact.

19 including 12 military personnel injured in bus explosion

Nineteen passengers including twelve military personnel were injured in an explosion inside a bus in Diyatalawa this morning, Army Media Spokesperson Brigadier Sumith Atapattu said.

He said seven soldiers and five airmen were among the military personnel who were injured. The rest of the injured were identified as civilians.

One injured in shooting at Cotta Road in Borella

One person has been injured and hospitalised following a shooting incident near the railway crossing on Cotta Road in Borella, the Police Spokesman said. 

He said that two unidentified individuals who arrived on a motorcycle had opened fire at a car near the railway crossing on Cotta Road at around 6.35pm today (20) and then fled the scene.

The driver of the car, a 32-year-old man from Kotahena, had sustained injuries in the shooting and has been admitted to the Colombo National Hospital for treatment.

Families of missing in Kilinochchi mark one year of protest

The families of the disappeared from Kilinochchi make their one year of continuous protest today (Tuesday), from 9am to 3pm, in the Kilinochchi town.

The protest is being staged to find out the truth about their loved ones and hold accountable those responsible for their disappearances.

President Maithripala met with the families of the disappeared in June and November last year and promised to release a list of surrenders who surrendered to the Army at the end of the war in 2009.

2 persons arrested over Kehelbaddara shooting


2 persons arrested over Kehelbaddara shooting

Two persons have been arrested in connection with a shooting incident in Kehelbaddara, Gampaha.

The suspects were arrested in Dippitigoda upon a tip-off received by Peliyagoda Divisional Crimes Division.

The police also seized a motorcycle which is believed to have been used for the crime.

The suspects were identified as residents of Dippitigoda area.

Further investigations into the incident are being carried out Gampaha Police.

They will be produced before Gampaha Magistrate today (20).

Fire at a rubber factory in Ja-ela


A fire erupted at a rubber factory in Ja-Ela,Raja Mawatha,last night. 

However, it was brought under control by the Fire Brigade, Police with the assistance of residents of the area.

The cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained and no casualties were reported, the Police Media Unit said.

Further investigations into the incident are being carried out by Ja- ela Police.

President continues to keep PM without removing him

Former President and MP Mahinda Rajapaksa today said it was none other than President Maithripala Sirisena who keeps Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in his post without ousting him.

The former president said this in response to a question asked by a journalist when he was leaving Parliament.

When asked his opinion about President Sirisena seeking Attorney General’s opinion on the legality of removing the Premier, Mr. Rajapaksa said “Why seek AG’s consultations? Shouldn’t forget that the President is the Executive,”

Sri Lanka’s case up for review in Geneva on March 16

The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) which meets next Monday for its 37th session will discuss Universal Periodical Review (UPR) outcomes for Sri Lanka on March 16.

On that day UPR outcomes for Benin, Pakistan, Zambia, Japan and Ukraine will also be taken up.

Meanwhile the UNHRC Secretary General’s country report/ oral briefing on Sri Lanka, detailing the progress the country has made on promoting human rights and the progress made on implementing a resolution to increase accountability, will take place on March 21. This will be followed up by a general debate.
